Gabriella Amini, Founder of We Empower Her

Gabriella Amini is a Congolese refugee, poet, and writer who turned her own hardship into a movement for the women and girls around her. While living in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Western Uganda, she experienced firsthand what it means to go through your period without proper products or information. She also watched that same lack of support push other girls toward abuse and exploitation while no one spoke openly about it.

That lived experience drove her to act. In Nakivale, Gabriella founded We Empower Her, a refugee led organization that helps women and girls understand their bodies, know their rights, and build the confidence to reach their full potential. The organization combines menstrual health education with practical support, and has distributed reusable menstrual cups, while improving the general health, wellbeing, and confidence of refugee women across several nationalities.

Gabriella's belief is simple and urgent: "A girl who can manage her period properly and understand her rights is less vulnerable to exploitation. That's why we must all stand and care for the wellbeing of girls in vulnerable communities."

Gabriella has since been resettled in Sweden and runs We Empower Her Sweden, while managing the organization she built in Nakivale, carried forward by the community of refugee women.
